# Commitments

> See how much of your eligible spend is covered by savings plans and reservations, and what goes unused

Commitments, such as savings plans, reservations, and committed use discounts,
lower your rates in exchange for paying for a fixed amount whether you use it or
not. CostGraph shows how much of your eligible usage they cover and how much of
what you committed to goes unused.

Read commitments with `GET /api/v1/tenant/cost/commitments` in the
[CostGraph API](/api-reference/costgraph/introduction). It works with an API
key that has the `focus:read` scope, and takes the same period and filters as
cost queries.

`group_by` is `provider` (the default), `service`, or `commitment`.

## Measures

The response has `totals` and one entry per group, each split by billed
currency:

| Field | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `committedCost` | Usage paid for by a commitment |
| `onDemandCost` | Usage paid at on-demand rates |
| `unusedCommitmentCost` | Commitment you paid for but didn't use |
| `unusedReservationCost` | Capacity reservations you paid for but didn't use |
| `eligibleUsageCost` | Usage spend, the base for coverage |
| `coveragePct` | The share of eligible usage a commitment covered |
| `discountOffList` | What you saved against list price, when your provider reports list prices |
| `effectiveCost` | What you paid in total |

Low coverage with steady usage suggests buying more commitment. High
`unusedCommitmentCost` means you committed to more than you use.
